Start a great sailing adventure!

The Start Sailing course is for complete beginners who would like to gain the first sailing experience. The syllabus includes personal safety, slipping and coming alongside, sailing theory, yacht handling under sail and basic safety at sea.

Target group

This course is an ideal starting point for anyone interested in yacht sailing and introduces the beginner to cruising.

Content

  • Basic knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat
  • Safety on board (fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard precautions and recovery, emergency equipment)
  • Rigging, sails and sail handling
  • Rope work
  • Meteorology (awareness of forecasting services and Beaufort scale of Seasickness)
  • Helmsmanship
  • Basic boat handling skills under sail and power
  • Night sailing
  • General duties

Course design

This one-week practical course is designed for a maximum of 5 students and takes place on the water. Students are accommodated on board. This course can be combined with any other course. You might be onboard together with students of higher levels.

A qualified RYA instructor will deliver the course content tailored to the needs of the participants.

Any training week will start with a general introduction and safety brief as well as an outlook over the week. Tuition of any other areas of the syllabus including night sailing will be arranged flexible according to the weather conditions and learning progress. Please do not plan additional activities. Expect a training week, rather than a cruising holiday.

After the course you will get a qualified debrief about your progress, and upon successful completion we can award a Competent Crew Course completion certificate.

Certificate issuing criteria

By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of yacht handling under sail as well as the relevant background knowledge.
